Past Events

"We Love OFOSA"

"We Love OFOSA" was heard as screams from the crowd more than once during the parade.  Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals participated in the City of Hillsboro's Happy Days Fourth of July parade.  It was a fun time with the people of Hillsboro lining the streets to cheer on the walkers!  OFOSA decorated  Bill Nechak's antique fire truck and over 10 volunteers and adoption dogs walk the parade. The children of OFOSA volunteers passed out 50 pounds of candy one piece at a time.  The fun and surprising thing was the number people who shouted "hi" or "OFOSA is where we adopted our dog or cat from".  The parade route took about a hour to complete with wagging tongues from both the walkers and dogs alike.

The 2nd Annual Paws for a Cause

a Big Success

March 6th was a night of fun. Our guests had food, drink, and lots of items to bid on. Thanks to our auction attendees we raised $19,000.  This will all go to help animals this year.

The evening started with KOIN 6's own Kacey Montoya and Carly Kennelly as guests of honor. Thanks to their gracious gift,  2 special people won lunch, a tour and private fitness training.

Robin Gordon made the live auction fun as she got the bidding started. Due to the  wonderful friends of OFOSA and local businesses, we had vacation packages, Blazer memorabilia, and the best almond cake anyone has ever eaten.

However, the big winners of the night were the animals. The funds raise will allow us to continue the work we did last year, one of our most successful years ever.

This past year we rescued and adopted over 2700 animals. We treated broken bones, pneumonia, kennel cough, and other medical maladies. We have rescued animals from as far away as California, we have helped shelters get needed supplies.

With the generosity of those businesses and individuals who donated the auction items to the amazing bidders who open their hearts to win the items, OFOSA's mission will continue strong this year.

OFOSA and SWWHS bring 80 dogs from high kill California Shelter to Oregon for adoption

The California crisis continues to touch the hearts of Oregon and Washington Rescues and humane societies. As a group, we are rallying to help the dogs find a new lease on life says. These dogs face certain death if allowed to stay in their present circumstance.

On March 31st, a crew of four representing OFOSA and Southwest Washington Humane society embarked on a 5 day journey to help 80 dogs and 6 cats find a new home.  Click here to see the video of the rescue effort

OFOSA and SWWHS rescued small, medium, pregnant, and puppies as well as 6 cats and broght them to Oregon for a second chance. "The dogs here are grateful and loving" says Cathy Nechak, president of OFOSA. It is like they know they have been saved from a certain death". The dogs will find new homes after a 7 day quarantine period and altering.

The shelter in San Bernardino California has a euthanasia rate of 80% for dogs and 96% for cats. Click here to see more about the shelter.

You can help by donations to fund more trips and for the care of these animals.

Peanut gets a new "Leash" on life

Peanut was a small frightened little girl in a big shelter. When OFOSA rescued her, she appeared healthy. Little did we know she had a congenital heart defect that was bound to take her life.

During the routine exam prior to spay surgery Julie Kittams, DVM discovered a heart murmur. She said “You could not only hear the murmur but you could feel it in her chest”.  Peanut's spay was postponed and an appointment was made to see Gary Woods, DVM a canine cardiologist. Peanut had a Patent Ductus Arteriosis, an abnormal connection in the blood vessels in her heart that should have closed when she was born. The outlook was grim, the surgery estimate was $7,000 and with out surgery she had only a few months to live.

Rick and Rita, long time benefactors of OFOSA. have generous and compassionate hearts. They asked to meet Peanut and could not bear to have her not have a chance. They funded her surgery at Oregon State University Veterinary hospital and it was a resounding success. She is playful and healthy and in her new adoptive home. Peanut inspired this year auction theme “providing a new leash on life” because this is what OFOSA strives to do every day.
