New Volunteer Coordinator brings energy and excitement to OFOSA!

Cyndi Athmanathan accepted the position of Volunteer coordinator in August and is making quite an impact already.  She has brought new life to the position with her weekly email blasts keeping everyone informed about the doings and opportunities to volunteer at OFOSA.  So if you are ready to enjoy yourself contact Cyndi at OfosaRescues@gmail.com

Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals needs you!

We need volunteers who can spend at least four hours a week helping us with our efforts.

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian. Student volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Here is a list of our volunteer opportunities:

1)  Transportation

  • Transportation of dogs and cats to and/or from weekend adoptions, medical appointments, and shelters.

  • Donation center food collections.

We need people during weekday and weekend hours.

2)  Petco Adoptions

  •  Walk dogs, clean cages, set up, and tear down.

  •  Evaluate, screen, and complete adoptions.  Must be 21 years of age or older, evaluated by our staff after a minimum of six months of volunteering, and must complete adoption training and education.

3)  Events

We are always in need of extra hands during events.  Available positions range from upper level business coordination to transporting supplies or running a booth.  Contact us at (503)-747-7818 for further information regarding upcoming events or complete and return a volunteer application and someone will contact you.

4)  Fostering

Be a foster home. What's involved? Opening your home to an animal in need, taking the animal to the vet for any needed care (OFOSA pays the vet), and finding the animal a home either by attending weekend adoptions or interviewing people from your home. See our foster page for further information.

Please give the gift of time! You can make a difference!

What Our Volunteers Are Saying…

“I began volunteering because I was interested in adopting a new family member and thought it would be a good way to learn about different types of animals to ensure the best fit for my household.  Over time, I discovered there was a tremendous number of animals needing help and realized that there was something that I could do to make a difference by becoming actively involved.”

OFOSA Supports Global, National, & Local Youth Programs

Beaverton High School foreign exchange student, Pavlo Pashkovsky of the Ukraine, came to live in the United States as part of the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) program during the '05-'06 school year.

The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) was established in 1992 as the centerpiece of the NIS Secondary School Initiative with FREEDOM Support Act funding from the State Department and USAID. Its goal is to provide an opportunity for high school students from the countries of the former Soviet Union to experience life in a democratic society in order to promote democratic values and institutions in Eurasia. Since its induction, over 14,000 students from the former Soviet Union have spent one academic year attending schools and living with host families throughout the United States.

During Pashkovsky’s stay in the United States, he volunteered many hours of community service with OFOSA. As part of the National & Global Youth Service Day hosted by Youth Service America, Pashkovsky assisted OFOSA at the Northwest Pet & Companion Fair ‘06. As a thank you, OFOSA's Shirley Demmin presented Pashkovsky with a United States flag as a remembrance of his stay in America.

National & Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world and includes millions of youth participants. This day mobilizes young people to identify and address community needs, supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public, the media, and elected officials about the role of youth as community leaders and assets.

In June, Pashkovsky returned to his home in the Ukraine where he will attend college to pursue a degree in international business. OFOSA would like to thank Pashkovsky for all his hard work and his commitment to service, learning, leadership, and achievement. We miss you!
